“Parasite” director Bong Joon Ho, this year’s Venice jury president, famously accepted his 2020 Golden Globe for best foreign film by assuring audiences that “once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.”

The argument is that English subtitles are helpful for non-English native speakers. And given the growing profile of the international voting members of groups like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and BAFTA, it makes sense that festivals are making every effort to be more inclusive. Gleiberman allows that there are certainly moments where subtitles are “undeniably” handy. “You can pick up a line that was too muffled to hear,” he admits. “But in the end I’d say: not worth it.”

No manori_r, the argument is not 'non-native speakers', they're also are critical for Deaf and hard of hearing people, and important for other disabilities too. Please correct the article. And us such OwenGleiberman your 'not worth it' comment was disgraceful, please retract.

1 - captions are good for business & necessity for 466 million deaf ppl who cannot fall back on hearing. 2 - captions & subtitles are not same. Captions are accessibility for deaf. Subtitles are translation for hearing & not 100% accessible to deaf.

Sounds like OwenGleiberman just doesn’t know how to watch movies then.

I never expected an actual bona fide film critic to make a comment like this.

Subtitles are made not only for foreigners but also for those who hard at hearings, old people and deaf community. Imagine you are sitting and typing on your laptop complaining about 1 inch of sentence on the bottom of frame and blatantly being ableist and racist

If American critics finds them distracting do these following things - 1. Get over yourself, people in Europe watch most things in subtitles. 2. Don´t go to a European Film Festival. 3. Learn How To Read and Watch at the same time, train your eyes. Good luck Variety critics 👍

And then there is me, an Italia who watch pretty much everything with English subs, and I mean in any language (Japanese, Chinese, Swedish Spanish, French, Russian, etc...). And subtitles are needed.

It's not polarising. The only person who is anti-subtitles is your obnoxious reviewer, who is clearly so entitled and American that he doesn't realise not everyone can clearly hear and understand English.

When you create a fake polarization by interviewing one of the most privileged and prejudiced critics in the business and who is against accessibility, pretend many others think like him (but don't quote anybody else who does) then call it journalism. Anything for likes, right?

My generation growing up watching Hong Kong movies with English & Chinese subtitle on the screen and listening to Cantonese in the same time. What is your lingual first world problem again?

Always have subtitles, always do when I have the chance and they should be more readily available. They don't 'distract' you if you dedicate time to getting used to them, esp if they are in your native language.

Watching movies with subtitles on allows you to pick up on details you would not get from just listening. I will never understand why people complain about it.

You miss so many great lines without subtitles, they are are always essential for me.

It's not polarizing. Some people are ableist, is all, and shouldn't be. Thanks, Variety, for reaffirming that you are just another rag for empire that we should all ignore.

Good! As someone who is hard of hearing, it is a nuisance when home media or streaming releases don't have subtitles for HOH viewers - and that includes English dialogue in foreign language films. It's 2021, this shouldn't be an issue anymore!

Sometimes those who aren‘t affected by barriers are really fucking mad when barriers are removed. Could it be…privilege?

“Warner Bros.’ “Dune” was an exception, and played only with Italian subtitles” My screening definitely had English subtitles (thank god) but maybe it was a one-off

I have an audio processing issue that makes dialogue somewhat hard to follow without subtitles. According to these people, should I not be allowed to watch movies in theatres and instead sit at home and think about what I've (not) done?

I speak English most of the time and it's my first language and I love watching a movie with subtitles

My Dune screening in Sala Grande had English subtitles, btw.

'Efforts to be more accessible for international audiences polarize American critics'? Really don't get it. The subs are even in a separate box below the screen. And they are super helpful for everyone who's not a native speaker.

Some people didn’t grow up watching HK cinema and it shows
