, we discovered that only 27% of employees say that their leader always encourages and recognizes suggestions for improvement.
The problem is that, in a leadership role, we have to be willing to let people grow into their roles and figure out the best ways to get the job done. Now, I’m not talking about clinical protocols in a hospital or safety procedures in a plant, where there are black-and-white correct and incorrect approaches. Rather, I’m talking about tasks or projects where there’s room for individual choice.
It’s one thing if a leader has demonstrably better skills and wants to micromanage, but it’s much worse if a leader wants something done their way without any demonstrated expertise in that area. You can see this when a boss starts wordsmithing marketing copy despite not being a writer, or reworking an employee survey with no expertise in research, or reordering a user interface with no UI background, and so on.
