shifted the zeitgeist and producers started realising audiences crave more than what was being dished up., an SBS mini-series that explores the lives of four families, three of them Vietnamese-Australian, all haunted by the lasting effects of the Vietnam War.I’m hoping this series will be a watershed moment for Australian TV, one that will usher in a new wave of stories to enrich our cultural landscape, because it’s about an Australia that is often misrepresented on the screen.
Indeed, my character Sang Tran is the head of emergency at the local hospital and the patriarch of a middle-class household in suburban Melbourne. But he has something most of my other roles have not: his own purpose. I was five at the time so my memory of it is pretty hazy, but I do recall being thirsty: so, so thirsty. And hungry. After three days afloat we had run out of food and water and would have disappeared like another ripple in that vast ocean if salvation in the form of an oil tanker hadn’t plucked us up.
Representing Asian-Australians in a positive light and having this opportunity to share a snippet of our culture to the wider community, to a country that has embraced me and my family, is a true honour. I say snippet because we have so many other stories to share and if the audiences are hungry enough I’d love to be a part of that.
