That changed with Bravo’s new reality showWhen the show was first announced, my phone lit up with text messages from family and close family friends asking me if I’d heard about it. Finally, a reality TV show about first-generation Indian American people and their parents had made its way onto primetime television.
The show is ostensibly about the younger generation, but they’re all tied together by their mothers, who formed what they like to call the Aunty Army after they all moved to Miami. You can think of the Aunty Army as the Real Housewives, but spicier—literally. They know the importance of properly seasoning food and teaching their children how to season. .
Then there’s Vishal and his fiancée Richa, who both live with Vishal’s parents . Vishal’s main preoccupation is figuring out how to convince his future mother-in-law to like him, as she thinks he’s not nearly intelligent enough for her daughter.
Amrit and his parents have a slightly different family dynamic; he came out to his parents when he was 25, after a few drinks. After some difficulty processing the information, his parents are incredibly supportive and accepting of his sexuality, and Amrit’s handsome boyfriend, Nicholas. And then there’s Bali, who is the oldest member of the friend group, and frequently hangs out with the Aunty Army as well.
