was sitting in Audobon Park in the Garden District of New Orleans when he made the life-changing decision to move to Los Angeles. ‘I told my parents,’ he says, ‘and they said, “You’re not.” I said, “I am.”’ He was 20 years old. ‘It was insane. It was my first bit of freedom as an adult.’ He packed an old banger his grandfather had given him and, with the one friend who’d introduced him to ‘proper films’, he made the three-day trip, never to look back.
His expectations on arrival in the city of dreams were humble. His agent reckoned he could book Kelvin an audition for The Simpsons, which seemed fair enough reason to arrive. ‘I’m young, I don’t look edgy or cool,’ he says frankly, ‘so maybe I could get intoor something.’ He took a pragmatic approach to work. ‘I was still learning what the craft was. I was learning what my face was. I had a settled point of view on it all. Whatever I get, I’m grateful to be getting the work.’.
Kelvin Harrison Jr wants to master his own destiny, just like he did back in Audobon Park. ‘You can’t continue to be in this business being an indie boy. It’s about breaking out of that and keeping my integrity. It’s a tricky balance. But we’re going to get there.’
