Billy Porter has revealed his version of the Fairy Godmother in the new live-action remake of Cinderella will be genderless.
"Magic has no gender," the star said in an interview with US channel CBS News, adding that young people are"ready" for the change.The Grammy, Tony and Emmy-winning actor and singer is set to star alongside pop star Camila Cabello, who plays the titular heroine, in the upcoming Cinderella, due for release in 2021.as he is for his work on screen, regularly making red carpet fashion lists thanks to his statement gowns, heels and headwear.
"It hit me when I was on the set last week, how profound it is that I am playing the Fairy Godmother - they call it the Fab G," he told CBS News."We are presenting this character as genderless - at least that's how I'm playing it. And it's really powerful. "I think the new generation is really ready. The kids are ready. It's the grown-ups that are slowing stuff down."
In a tweet about the role, Porter said:"This Cinderella is a classic fairytale for a new generation. To be able to play this genderless, fabulous fairy godmother - what a gift."Last year, the star spoke to Sky News ahead of a performance at London Pride, and discussed the reasons behind his attention-grabbing outfits.
