Beyond a talent for appearing in front of the television cameras and a photogenic appeal that has earned them both legions of devoted fans, Jameela Jamil and Phillip Schofield may not have thought they had much in common. But last week they both made the same big decision: to come out.
Because he’s a likeable TV host and she’s a race baiting professional provocateur. Quite simple really.

I'm a liberal open-minded guy. I don't need to label people, but if people want to label themselves I'll support them 100%. BUT: I don't understand what someone means when they says they're queer, as opposed to gay/ bi/ trans. What are they trying to tell me about themselves?

Schofield is a well loved UK household name who has been on tv for years. Jamil is barely known by the older generation especially in the UK & disliked if Twitter is anything to go by. So I don’t think the two situations are comparable.

What do you mean no one knew Schofield was gay? I was living in the UK in 1992 and I knew. Was it anyway not obvious? As for all the young queers, if they are still calling themsleves bi, queer or non-binary at 40 I'll believe them. Remember 'gay before graduation'?

Being bi/pan is simply not accepted as more binary concepts like only liking the opposite sex or only liking your own sex.
The short, true version: Jamil gets criticised, can't take the criticism, announces being queer in hope of being idolised rather than criticised. Schofield gets threats from someone who has dirt on him and comes out in public as gay to avoid exposure out of his control.
BECAUSE SHE'S NOT ACTUALLY GAY
Why is this news? From the late 80’s I worked in travel for much of the 2nd half of my working life. As a straight white male I was in a majority other than “white” and then it was close. Also did 6 years in the NHS. Same again. People are people. Sexuality & colour irrelevant.
Why people have to announce their sexuality as if it is something salicious..We are what we are!
Dunno. Kind of an instinct with Jamil I thought, nah I'm not having this. With Schofield it just seemed, yeah. Y'know. Okay.

You are obviously reading different media to me. I have seen both positive and extremely negative coverage on both of them. I would however wager a pound that Scofe was motivated by a phone call from the gutter press, while Jamil wasn't.
