World War I epic “1917” is the big winner at Sunday’s British Academy Film Awards, earning seven trophies including best picture and best director.

Renee Zellweger poses for photographers upon arrival at the Bafta Film Awards, in central London, Sunday, Feb. 2 2020.

“1917” was also named best British film and won the cinematography prize — Roger Deakins’ fifth win in that category. It also took the prizes for production design, sound and visual effects. No women were nominated as best director for the seventh year running, and all 20 nominees in the lead and supporting performer categories were white.

British star Cynthia Erivo, who is Oscar-nominated for her performance as abolitionist Harriet Tubman in “Harriet” but was snubbed by Britain’s Academy, declined an invitation to perform at Sunday’s award ceremony in protest.BAFTA chairwoman Pippa Harris said the problem was “an industry-wide issue.”

“So many women made great films this year,” she said. “And I think it just goes to show you that there is a systemic problem that is very prevalent.” Laura Dern was named best supporting actress for playing a take-no-prisoners divorce lawyer in “Marriage Story. She noted that her mother, Dianne Ladd, had won the exact same prize in 1975, when Dern was 6, for “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.”

Truly one of the best-made pictures I have ever seen.

1917 is so overrated

Thought the Irishmen was a waste of time. Extremely boring. Joker was amazing as was Parasite. Once you a time is worth seeing and I could watch it again. Marriage Story was a beautiful, but sad movie. Driver and Johansson were incredible. Haven’t seen 1917 yet.

Interesting film with its one-continuous-take shooting style and definitely worth seeing in a theater, but too 'Saving Private Ryan' ish and the lackluster plot isn't Best Picture caliber.

I don't normally watch such shows, but I am rather enjoying it. I wish the cameras panned round on the audience more, and highlighted the everyday film stars such as TV Presenters who we see regularly?

The Superhero villain saga.... Did yall watch the movie? There wasnt even a Superhero in Dark Knight or Suicide Squad. Let alone whatever the hell Joker is supposed to be

Is the controversy that it was a bad movie and script that also had a decent performance and great cinematography?

Hold up! World War I epic “1917” is the big winner at Sunday’s British Academy Film Awards while the superhero villain saga 'Joker' leads the race for Sunday's British Academy Film Awards.

Very stupid boring movie. All is about a soldier running all movie. Nothing really interesting.

Why? It wasn’t that great...it wasn’t even that good... Maybe they just love SamMendes or maybe it’s who shmoozes the voters the most!! 1917Film EEBAFTAs

Headline doesn't match the article. Great job yet again by the AP

Why? I could not get through it.

You might wanna recheck this one....

Both headlines disagree with one another
