Whenever Andrews and Stewart find these moments — Seberg staring listlessly to the sound of Bobby Wright's haunting soul ballad Blood of An American, or stumbling through a film premiere to the chilly refrain of Scott Walker's It's Raining Today — the film pushes toward some kind of poetry that liberates it from the screenplay's creaky thematic gestures.
Seberg's activism should have been enough to sustain an engaging narrative, yet the script by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse makes the puzzling, and deeply infuriating decision to devote nearly half the screen time to fictionalised — and improbably sympathetic — FBI agent Jack Solomon , a young bureau stiff assigned to monitor and humiliate the actress as part of the government's shadowy anti-subversive operation.
The moderate Solomon stands in contrast to his violently conservative, casually racist partner — an excellent Vince Vaughan.
