Combat experience is often blamed as the root cause of suicidal behavior among veterans. But ongoing Army studies show that many troops with mental-health problems can trace them back to trauma experienced before they joined the military.
“There is a significant and growing proportion of soldiers who enter the military with psychiatric disorder, increasing the risk over time for suicide behaviors within the Army,” according to a paper released earlier this year from University of Washington researchers that used data from...
. . .this shouldn't be a surprise. Society has lost safety nets that once facilitated resilience in early adulthood-now young people are raised in families with insecure financial futures that rob generations of any real agency around becoming more secure. Our politicians own it.
Why is army not screening for mental health prior to exposing vulnerable military to combat?
Here was me thinking that many soldiers realised they were lied to about the reasons for going to war. I thought they maybe realised they were not the good guys and that this troubled them deeply to thier very core but not so says the army....... bullsh..t
Interesting
Have always believed recruits must pass a psychological exam by a psychiatrist before they are sworn into service. Recruits do get a medical exam but not psychological exam. When I enlisted, there were no psychological exams and it showed during boot camp in fellow recruits.
I don’t trust this for a second; particularly since if these people were actually sick they would’ve never made it through basic, multiple psych exams and tours of duty in war zones
Lol army studies, f that
Sometimes the only way to get the medical care you need is by joining the military.
My experience as an infranty latoon commander and battalion legal officer, USMC, leads me to conclude, like this Journal article, that emotionaaly fragile personalities may have their problems exacerbated by the demands of military service.
Most soldiers join the armed forces for the economic benefit and are never prepared for war. One must be able to be unaffected by danger, kill people, and move on without a second thought. Only met one person that had that quality and enjoyed his job as a mercenary.
I disagree with that. When you see your friends blown to pieces and women and children mutilated just shopping for food on a daily basis and come home to people oblivious to it nothing seems to matter anymore. MAY JESUS HELP THEM
I am calling bullshit. That seems like a way for the Army to shift blame. If that is the case, they shouldnt be allowed into the military to begin with!
they had to have mental problems to enlist
Just an excuse for US army to wash his hands from this sick soldiers, use them then throw them to the trash .
Or did traumatic events drive people to the Army & did events during service compound the underlying mental illness?
So BC they have issues beforehand we should dismiss the trauma they experience in combat? What is the purpose of this article?
