Cindy Valdez-Adams works with schools to increase their capacity to support refugee students’ wellbeing, as well as social, emotional and academic learning

Cindy Valdez-Adams says teaching young people who have recently arrived in Australia is one of the most rewarding roles a teacher can have.

Cindy Valdez-Adams, pictured here with students from Fairfield Public School, says teaching English as an additional language is “the most rewarding” role. “I get to witness our learners acquire the English language and engage in meaningful and purposeful learning experiences, but most of all … they develop confidence in all areas of their schooling,” she says.Rather than simplify the curriculum for students new to the English language, Valdez-Adams aims to “amplify” it by implementing high-challenge, high-support programs. She says it’s an equity issue to ensure that all students have access to the Australian curriculum.

She’s well placed to collaborate with other EAL/D teachers and guide their professional learning. A project she has worked on since 2017 – Designing Learning through Vocabulary Development – has reached more than 90 teachers and 2000 students from 19 schools.
