At a time when the complicated, exploitative rigging of the world has been so laid bare—mostly because the people doing the rigging don’t seem to care if we notice them doing it anymore—there is something both satisfying and hopeless about watching someone try to hold it accountable. It’s an interesting era for the class action lawsuit movie, the whistle-blower film.
There could be a note of coastal condescension in that—look at all this lost and irredeemable middle space—but I think there is a good deal of genuine empathy at work inThe recent past of the film reflects our own current gloom, reminding us that the fight against unfeeling, if not outright malevolent, capitalist interest exists on one perhaps never-ending continuum. The road is steep and bitter and hard, but there is still, sometimes, some traction to be gained.
