In the early spring of 1985, Carrie Fisher suffered an overdose of tranquilizers and was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center by two friends, one a doctor, David Kipper, and one a writer, Carol Caldwell; they pumped her stomach and saved her life. Her brush with death led to subsequent time spent in rehab – and a very earnest 11-month-long hewing to Alcoholics Anonymous sobriety.
