Beyond breaking classical music stereotypes with their music, duo Black Violin also aims to inspire kids to pursue careers in the arts. “For me, my favorite part of playing this instrument is that I'm not supposed to do it,” violinist Kev Marcus says.

When violinist Kev Marcus and violist Wil B met on the first day of their high school orchestra class, they decided to take the classical music they were learning to the next level.

The classicly trained duo — whose real names are Kevin Sylvester and Wilner Baptist — formed Black Violin and found their unique sound mashing together Bach with Biggie Smalls., playing music that embraces different genres and appeals to all ages. Their new album,"Take The Stairs," blends classical music with genres like hip-hop, rock and pop.

Beyond breaking classical music stereotypes with their music, the duo also aims to inspire kids to pursue careers in the arts.

Lol, who's stopping you from playing it?

Fabulous what a hard instrument to play

Black Violin is amazing, and inspirational. First heard them play scholarathletes gala 2 summers ago. Great role models.

Loved seeing them in concert!

I experienced them in East Lansing, MI...they were AMAZING and their message is critical and relevant for young people!

Loved this interview. Greatly admire these two talented musicians for breaking racial and genre boundaries. I hope they enjoy critical and commercial success.

Saw these guys in Easton PA a few years ago and was blown away. At first I just thought it was an interesting mix of genres, until I started focusing on their mad skills. Wow!

I love these guys!

Also Nuttin But Stringz from 2004!

These guys are awesome. They performed for my orchestra students several years ago, and were as genuine as can be.

Why isn't he supposed to do it?

Impressive!

What are the classical music stereotypes?

C'mon
