The Spotify Awards are coming!

It might not seem like we're in need of yet another music awards show, but the Spotify Awards -- set to take place in Mexico City on March 5, 2020 -- are different. For one thing, they bill themselves as the "first-ever award ceremony 100% based on user-generated data." For another, their focus is on Mexico and Latin America.

Spotify has signed a partnership with Turner Latin America, which will broadcast the ceremony live via TNT to Mexico and all of Spanish-speaking Latin America. "Thanks to streaming and the true audience size of Mexico, users are in the front seat like never before," said Mia Nygren, Spotify's managing director for Latin America. "We decided to celebrate this by recognizing what users love based entirely on their listening. The Spotify Awards is all about this, giving everyone an opportunity to be part of the show."

Spotify launched in Mexico in 2013, five years after its global launch. Spotify says that Mexico City has the most listeners on Spotify globally, ahead of such cities as New York City, London and Paris. Spotify says it will leverage data from users’ streaming choices to determine the awards categories, as well as the finalists and winners. According to a statement, the show will recognize a broad range of genres, from hip-hop and rock to reggaeton, banda and cumbia.
