Yes definitely! If you come from a working class background like myself, with no savings or family to help, the struggle is intense. Student Finance England do actually help with £10,000 of the fees, however RCA is around £20,000 for home students, so I couldn’t originally enrol as I didn’t have enough to even pay in instalments. Luckily I figured some things out, but it’s been a tough beginning to my course financially.
It definitely affects working class people. Most people who are on these established MA’s specifically come from a more wealthy family, nothing wrong with that, but there needs to be even more help for working class people. Some people on my course at the RCA in my situation luckily got scholarships, however I didn’t get mine and it nearly meant I had to take a year out or not do it. I never give up, that’s why I did the GoFundMe.
So basically I had a residency with Home Live Art which led to a residency at The Marlborough Theatre where I developed my performance art piece,, my debut theatre show. Sink plunger is a metaphor for having a basic job and plunging our lives away. I was working in a really boring shop at the time, and every time I would use the toilet this plunger had ‘Sink Plunger’ sticker still attached to it, and I thought it was so surreal.
