Fixated by the shapes of the body, designer Sinéad O'Dwyer creates a futuristic cast of singer KelseyLu, in critique of the gaze and remaining grounded.

Was it a case of trial and error or was it one take only?Ideally we would have gotten it perfect in one because of how little time there was but when we de-moulded it first it looked awful! The balance of resin to fibreglass was all off and the jaw had moved so the face looked very strange! It's in a material I don't usually use for my final pieces and so using the embedding technique I developed for my silicone pieces was a challenge and it was also a super ambitious piece to make due...

It was really weird because the stage was so big and she was suspended so became so much smaller and more elusive. She had been in my hands all week so my experience of her was so physical and tactile. I think that's the interesting part about the piece, that it can have this ghostlike quality and melt into the red light of the blood moon but also be a sculpture with weight and scent and texture.

Definitely, I've never made a final piece in transparent resin and you never know how a material is going to react to what you want to do with it until you try! The fibreglass did not like the synthetic hair at all, so that was a bit stressful.
