Blake Shelton performs onstage during the 53rd annual CMA Awards at the Bridgestone Arena on Nov. 13, 2019 in Nashville.brought an incendiary version of his chart-topping 2019 smash "God's Country" to the Country Music Association Awards at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Wednesday night .
With a stomp-clapping beat, a nasty fiddle solo, spine-tingling backing vocals, plenty of on-stage pyro to spare -- and of course, Blake's own sneering delivery -- Shelton demonstrated why the song was a winner for single of the year earlier in the night. The performance ended with Shelton and his fiddle player embracing, and a beaming Gwen Stefani cheering her guy on from the audience.
In addition to the single of the year win, "God's Country" was also nominated for video of the year for its Sophie Muller-directed clip -- though it lost to Kacey Musgraves' Hannah Lux Davis-helmed visual for Kacey Musgraves' "Rainbow." Shelton was also a nominee for musical event of the year for his Garth Brooks collab "Dive Bar," but the two lost out to Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus' historic "Old Town Road" teamup.
"God's Country" became Shelton's stunning 26th leader on the Country Airplay tally in July, and peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same month -- his biggest hit on the chart since "Boys Round Here" over six years earlier.
