Performance artist SoojinChang talks us through her performance of 'The Death Ritual'.

Performance art seems a bit less straightforward than other art practices. How did you get involved, and how does one 'learn' how to do it?Performance art is undefinable. For me, they are interruptions, subversions, or interrogations. Or simply, actions. They are initiated by the body and developed through presence. The implication of the artist’s body creates a space that opens up a particular element or construct of politics, society, psychology, etc.

You have these intents in mind and from then it’s a process of actions and reactions, moving between discomfort and claims to agency. There’s nothing more to learn. It’s strange to classify something as performance art because all art making, and all doing for that matter, is a performance. The best performance artist is probably an emotionally-repressed dad or the most invisible person in your class.

The work creates a link between the violence that occurs within humans to the violence that humans practice towards the environment. I was interested in how trauma and emotional attachments hinder that type of direct empathy towards lives outside our immediate relations.
