Share to linkedin... [+]I am talking to Trent Reznor, mastermind of Nine Inch Nails and Oscar-winning composer, on a Friday morning. He is home in Los Angeles and I am in Long Beach, California, as the city is on fire.
But Reznor has also written moments of stunning beauty, from"Something I Can Never Have" and"Hurt" to"In This Twilight." It's being able to live in both those worlds and bring them together seamlessly that make NIN such an acclaimed live act. Maybe, maybe not. As a diehard Reznor fan I would argue yes. But either way, there is no arguing he is unquestionably one of the most interesting and thought provoking. So when Reznor sits down for a 45-minute call on everything from streaming to songwriting to the Talking Heads you are in for a hell of a conversation .feels very much in character with your other work, even though it is a score.
Baltin: This felt like a complete work as opposed to snippets of music. Because it evolves over time does it feel similar to making an album where you discover through lines after the fact? Reznor: Here's the way I feel about that. Yes, I'm from a different era and I'm not the luddite who thinks you shouldn't listen to streaming music. Do whatever the f**k you want. But if you want to know how it was intended to be consumed, a lot of my favorite older albums are vinyl, side A, side B, that's two different acts. Side B of [Bowie's]and I like that format. When I think of sequencing a record, I think of it in sides of an album.
Pass.
