is the sort of musically elaborate, dramatically impoverished opera Richard Wagner struggled to reform . Written for the coronation of the restored Bourbon monarch Charles X in 1824, Rossini’s plot doesn’t rise even to the level of flimsiness.
To the extent it makes any point beyond burlesque, the setting highlights places where art compromises itself to serve the rich and powerful. When The Three Graces of Canova’s beautiful statue come to life and dance topless around the stage the effect was tawdry, though it did make the point that art often provide a pretext for men to ogle women’s bodies.
The large cast, however, was excellent. Irina Lungu as Corinna sang with gloriously coloured melodiousness and fluid tone during the coronation scene. As the gallery owner, Madama Cortese, Julie Lea Goodwin had lean edge and precision and Emma Pearson sang the Contessa di Folleville’s mock tragic numbers with brilliant vocal agility and fire.
