Katie Jarvis: Actors say there's 'no shame in taking normal jobs'

In a show of solidarity, many other TV stars revealed they too supplement their acting careers with other types of employment.

TV critic Emma Bullimore tells the BBC she understands why actors are getting upset with the newspaper for splashing Jarvis's new non-acting job all over the front page in a"humiliating" manner."I can see both sides of it really as it does feel quite cruel in the way that they did it, kicking her while she's down I suppose," says Bullimore.

"Then she disappeared, slightly oddly, and now suddenly she's working at B&M. I think if she was working at Waitrose it would not be as good a story." Bullimore believes"it feels like a choice", in this instance, for her to make the move away from the camera so soon, which makes it all the more intriguing for readers.

Who?

Screw them. There’s no shame in working any job.

Remind sthem what reality is

Is this anybody else's business, really? Is that what makes news today? Oh dear! 😖

Ground breaking news? Someone has to work to pay the bills? Good work!!

This is not news . She has bills like everyone else, so what if she working in a shop. That’s why l stop buying news papers . They just want to bully or bittle people all the time. Draining and boring tbh

and you just had to destroy a british news story by ending it with a paragraph on a couple of americans --you really are unfit for function --you do not deserve the publics money --abolish the tv licence

Every single normal, decent person supports Katie Jarvis. Only hideous, snarky journalists tried to shame her. Thankfully it properly backfired.

Imagine being criticised for working, really! Good luck to Katie in finding work, any work, in order to provide for herself. Katie, be very proud of yourself. I wish you well in whatever you do and ignore those showing moronic tendencies, they aren't worth your time.

Slow news day, I take it.

I’m sure she won’t be out of acting for long now. Good luck to her.

It's called paying the bills.

So what she has to eat and pay her bills. It's happened to the best of them at some point. Give the girl a break.

Acting is 'a job' , she is not taking a 'normal job' she is just working like everybody else, be it acting, working in retail ... all just jobs!

Luvies arrogance on display once again

All the best to her but is “lady has a job” really news worthy? It’s not like there isn’t anything else going on 🤷🏼‍♂️

I hope she finds a slot on a daytime show and that helps her pay the Bill's. This moronic newspaper and the 'journalist' hack twat that wrote such a disgusting piece...just might get her work! I hope so. Fair play to you. Needs must n all that!

Define normal

Of course there's no bloody shame in taking a 'normal' job. Most of us on here have 'normal' jobs.

The majority of the wealthy UK are actors. They pretend they can afford multiple bedroom houses, drive big cars and claim they pay their taxes! Wouldn’t worry about it.

Pisses me off when you here the words 'I am an out of work actress or actor'. Total credit to her she believes nothing or no one is below her and neither should she think anyone is above her. Glad to see working class values are alive and well!

Wow. Cheers, actors. We hear you.

Of course there isn't. Good for you

There is never shame in working. Unless you are an estate agent or sell weapons to Saudi for BAE.

There isn't a job is a job at the end of the day

Only the tabloid thinks it's a good story. It isn't.

How fing big of her!

Can’t really see that this is a news story, but good for her anyway.

But.... The BBC sacked her, just doesnt seem right the BBC reporting on it, then jumping on the story, its like the media made their own drama, media company sacks girl, girl get job, media company mocks her, media stars back her, ex-media employer backs media stars. Weird.

Had the pleasure of meeting this lovely lady years ago ,she is one of the most beautiful and down to earth ladies your ever meet ,and yes Gillian is right ,I’d clean toilets if I had too,I wish Katie Jarvis all the best in the world .

Acting is one of the most unpredictable and insecure careers and unless you are a very well known public figure with regular paid acting work, it would be inconceivable that you could survive on scraps of acting jobs here and there. There is no shame at all in taking normal jobs.

So, People with so-called normal 🙃 jobs are less than. Really!

Imagine trying to shame somebody for trying to provide for their family 🤦🏻‍♂️ absolutely disgusting stuff!

I’ve been acting my whole life and never got paid for it

Why is this even in the news.. Katie is an actress with a contract, rather like a temp, the contract ends, she looks for another contract.. good luck to her.

Non-story, she's working during acting jobs.. So what.. Sounds a lot like job shaming to me.

I knew a nuclear physicist who worked in a card shop . It would surprise you that people have to live.

Genius, making a story of 'not a story'. Find something else to report

Top human Katie good luck. To be an actor you have to be available/un-employed as you wait for the right job you have to turn some down doing a normal job is interesting helps you asn actor to be part of community-meet portray people & their lives & you have to make a living

Work is work... who cares what the task is..? People are truly insane! 🤦‍♀️

pass this on to her: ❤️

And she is right proves she is a normal human being 👌

Let’s all demand a livable wage, free education, low and free cost healthcare, low to zero cost childcare. Our governments do so much for the rich. But what about the disappearing middle class, struggling working class and the working poor. We need change not shame.

Thanks actors

It's called work - it's what responsible people do. Responsibility... not something the 'journalists' at the Star would be familiar with.

Is this normal news and is this a normal response from a normal bloke? 🙄

We must all stop believing in the fantasy that all actors are mega rich simply because they have fame. This points to the insecurity of the labor market. In America people work two or three jobs now because of wealth inequality and lack of a social net that truly works.

This is well known for the vast majority of actors it's called resting.

KatieJarvis is great. Always has been.

Why is this even in a newspaper? This lovely lady can do, and be, whatever she wants without b.....y media attention. Grrr

No shame at all. Being in the ‘real world’ can help them portray real world characters in future roles. Understanding comes from experience. MPs take note (he said forlornly).

She will be fronting a bbc3 documentary before you know it. A non story tbh, she needed money so got a job.

But people with normal jobs think actors are dicks.

There is shame in buying the sun, mirror or the daily star though.

As the majority of actors cannot find work in their own profession it is hardly surprising that they find work elsewhere. I wish her all good fortune.

At least she’s doing a job and not signing on or sitting somewhere feeling sorry for herself. Good on her

Had no idea she was the girl from Fish Tank. Should be getting much better roles than Eastenders. Tragic. Needs a decent agent.

Acting is a normal job! I hate it when society say these things! We actorswork hard!and we are NORMAL same as Tesco employee?,thetimes

SpainSitAndTalk

Aren’t something like 90% of actors out of work at any one time?

Night Jude Sleep well, sprinkling Fairy Dust😽

Back to square one , feel sorry for her

none at all

It’s a shame the press thought otherwise.

Poor lass having her life all ove the news like this Its disgusting that media have made this a big deal

They just act, unsure if that ranks as a skill for life.

Amazingly that ridiculous story about her will probably get her acting work.

Are you ashamed for having a real job?
