Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce has lashed out over a press freedom campaign, accusing the media of taking a hypocritical approach.

“I understand your imperative of the public interest test, but you can’t say a pregnant woman crossing the street is in the public interest,” Mr Joyce said in reference to a news report which made public his affair with former staffer Vikki Campion. "To get respect around the term public interest, you’ve got to act in the public interest," he said.

The Executive Chairman of News Corp told Sky News 'scrutiny must take precedence over secrecy' as media organisations unite for greater protections for journalists and whistleblowers this week. The 'Your Right to Know' campaign has seen Australia's newspapers censor their front pages – and radio and television alerts asking the public to question increasing restrictions on the media.
