Psychologist William Richards has studied psychedelics since the '60s. He says Johns Hopkins University's new center for psychedelic research may usher in “a whole new era” of treatment for mental illnesses. (hereandnow)

Johns Hopkins University has launched awith $17 million in donations solely from private donors, the first of its kind in the U.S.

Richards began his journey with psychedelics in the early ‘60s, in the midst of a wave of psychedelic research, when he was a graduate student in Germany and volunteered for a psilocybin trial. Psilocybin mushrooms are typically known as “magic mushrooms” or “shrooms” for short. “I would say that arose out of the cultural change in fears back in the 1960s,” Richards says. “It's distorted. It’s inaccurate.”

That supportive environment allows patients to “feel free to just kind of sink into their minds, embrace whatever emerges — whether it’s pleasant or unpleasant initially — and trust the healing processes of their own minds,” he says. He says some patients on psychedelic substances might find themselves working through grief, guilt or confusion. He hopes furthering research at Johns Hopkins University will lead to legal, insurance-covered psilocybin therapy, specifically in palliative care, which would assist those nearing death in coping with anxiety and depression.

hereandnow DUDE DRUGS!!! AHA NICE!!!!

hereandnow Promise is still a “maybe” which is still a no till it’s a “yes.” Much more science needed before prescriptions imho. But worth the trip to find out (pun intended).

hereandnow Old news finally catching on? Huxley, Groff, Halifax, and Leary have well documented similar findings decades ago. In a country in the midst of an opioid epidemic where AR15s are legal and mushrooms aren’t, this progress feels like too little too late.

YennaBee hereandnow Hmmmm. Maybe that'll help?

hereandnow alecarundel

hereandnow 👀?

hereandnow Those of us who have tried them, will know that this, when handled by unprejudiced & knowledgeable medical practitioners, is absolutely true. We also know that these substances are not magic(!) bullets, and will not work like your ibuprofen.

hereandnow I watched a story about this recently and was very impressed with the research being done. Afterall, bread mold gave us penicillin.

hereandnow Maybe we should go ask Alice first

hereandnow Psychedelics can have very positive affects when used therapeutically but the abuse potential is severe. Controlling it has to be considered from the beginning or it will end up in a Timothy Leary style free for all with predictable backlash.

hereandnow I just need to a have a threesome after popping a pill or something and I'll be good lol

hereandnow oh come on! this is following Trump's line of locking up the mentally ill, over-medicate them to keep them restrained in beds and wheelchairs so no nurses have to be hired, and this will stop gun violence lie. LSD is not a good thing.

hereandnow The 70s was right. Except for all those STDs. Otherwise, they were on track. Minus the heroin.

hereandnow Fuck yea! party

AshDKelly hereandnow _rk17 fascinating article

hereandnow Duh

hereandnow Already knew this in my 20s but don't tell anyone...aw crap.

hereandnow Oh Lawd - wasn't that tried in the sixties & seventies?

hereandnow The NPR writers must be excited because they've all got mental health disorders.

cmarinucci hereandnow When marijuana is not legal in most states?

hereandnow It blows my mind that mushrooms were ever illegal at all. How is smiling and laughter, deep feelings of happiness and feeling like a child for 4 hours a bad thing?

hereandnow It will open the doors of perception

hereandnow Duh.

hereandnow Has anyone reading this been helped with their depression/anxiety by doing this?

blackr0se_x hereandnow Works great for me.

hereandnow

hereandnow Fact! Not News... Legalize

hereandnow Geez, I guess Timothy Leary didn't have it all wrong in the 60's. The times they are a changin' for sure!

hereandnow Are they really? Or are they just teaching people to avoid their issues via escapism as opposed to dealing with it.

hereandnow Looking forward to this! I know people who are heavily medicated to help deal w ptsd. The meds can be as devastating as the illness. &the added burden of poor outcomes in treatment. To be able to just erase the terror is wonderful. Hurry!

hereandnow mind blown ...

hereandnow Great to see companies like Compass in UK and Paul S. in Seattle making huge strides in making it ready for trials in people with chronic conditions....hopefully, we will see real breakthroughs here over the next decade

hereandnow Remember the dose hee

hereandnow SCVTTERBRVIN

hereandnow Always fun being around people working out crazy.

hereandnow The ego break is the most profound aspect of psycadelics. Its like putting on prescription glasses you didn't know you needed. They allow you to see not just your view but take in others perspectives.

hereandnow Oh, boy. Here we go again. 🥴

hereandnow Yes

hereandnow jazmensafina

RogueJo hereandnow Ayahuasca is amazing

hereandnow When we respect the wisdom from other cultures we can get a great benefit from it, our stubborn entitlement and imaginary superiority had blind us from that knowledge. Natives from America has practiced this cleanses as a ritual each year to go back to our inner needs and sense.

hereandnow Hell I've known that forever you just now finding out ? So does THC !

hereandnow ugh I fuck with a good trip

hereandnow As someone with mental health issues who has taken psychedelics in the past I will say this: not for everyone. For me, they only exacerbated my symptoms. Stop enabling the myth that entheogens are some miracle medicine.

hereandnow Yo I’m depressed hook me up with that shid

hereandnow Bullsh&. Here we go again with druggies trying to make their habit okay. getreal

hereandnow Helps w/ ocd

hereandnow Psilocybin is pretty incredible stuff. It's like an edible mental reset button.

hereandnow No thanks, that would make things worse.

hereandnow how do I get into an MDMA study

hereandnow The worst part about news about psychedelics is that it's still the news

hereandnow So, magic shrooms making a comeback? Shades of my Hippie days!

hereandnow shrooms and molly

hereandnow good

hereandnow Evidently, a whole new generation of doctors and scientist banking on making a new buck. It is hard not to be cynical when similar pursuits for pain management went greatly greatly awry.

hereandnow In case you don’t know, these substances come with risks and should not be sampled if your family has a history of certain mental illnesses, namely bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Be careful out there. Not everyone comes back from a bad trip.

hereandnow Being in Indiana , about the most potent substance I can hope for is Bourbon 🥃

hereandnow I’ve used shrooms and I can vouch for their healing/calming effects. This research looks promising. I’m for anything that can help relieve the suffering caused by mental illness.

hereandnow They should bring these mushroom studies to Wisconsin

hereandnow Stormy says 'line 'em up'🍄

hereandnow Legalize marijuana. Legalize shrooms. Our poor kids will think it’s okay to do drugs. It’s not healthy.

hereandnow More of this please.

hereandnow I believe psychedelics saved my life. My experiences were introspective and helped me sort through the trauma of my childhood and work through negative cognitions inherent in my PTSD. Glad it’s being studied!

hereandnow Oh my 😄

hereandnow I’m glad that’s not my scene 😅 fr

hereandnow This is old news. Psychedelics have been in use to treat mental issues for more than hundreds of years.

hereandnow These grow in my yard every spring

hereandnow Haven't done any since the 70s but it makes you feel good.

hereandnow Uh oh. Damn... Yup. Think I just came down with some depression and anxiety. Where do I sign up?

hereandnow TrueAnonPod oh yeah that's why they're doing this right.
