Most voters want action on climate change but recent elections suggest there is a limit to how much they are willing to pay, writes tomwconnell.

To get to the prize round, contestants had to guess the value of a household item.

Most voters want action on climate change but recent elections suggests there is a limit to how much they are willing to pay. Last election they had Labor’s 45 per cent by 2030, versus the Coalition’s 28 per cent. Labor had bragging rights on taking action, but only the Coalition could run a campaign querying cost. Labor now thinks it can’t be that ambitious.

But after years of calling the government’s target inadequate, it would be a huge backdown for Labor. There would be an almighty battle within the caucus to get support, which would most likely fail. Labor’s internal division on climate would be there to see, as a squabble erupts over what the magic number is.

From there it’s a case of adding new policies that increase the target organically – each step bringing its own reduction percentage.A properly fleshed out electric car policy with a renewable energy target factored in. Vehicle emissions standards for petrol cars, again with more detail than the ALP previously outlined. Perhaps a fund for the meat industry to reduce emissions without increasing costs. More energy efficiency measures for homes and businesses.

tomwconnell 'Most voters want action on climate change'... that is not what the last election says, no matter how you want to spin it.
