First phase of Metropolitan Theater restoration almost complete

This was the third attempt to restore the theater to its original grandeur. The first was initiated by former First Lady Imelda Marcos and then by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The building was designed by Juan Arellano, the architect behind the Manila Central Post Office.

Escalante said that the two other wings would house a ballroom, a museum, an office of the NCCA — the agency that owns the theater — aside from an artist’s workplace and a courtyard. “This theater once housed zarzuela performances, which is why we will open [the MET] with zarzuela,” Almario said.
