Disabled students suspended at high rates in NSW schools | jordsbaker

Students with a disability make up 20 per cent of the school population but more than 40 per cent of those suspended.

. The NCCD records all students with a disability for whom adjustments have been made. They include physical, intellectual, cognitive and sensory disabilities. The department's figures also showed that of the 109,483 students suspended between 2014 and 2018 in NSW public schools, 6.2 per cent or 6831 of them were in stage one - or aged around six or seven years old - at the time.

The NSW Department of Education policy statement says suspension is not designed to be punitive, but rather to give the school, student and parents time to put strategies in place to help avoid a similar situation in the future.

JordsBaker Physical violence? My son goes to a special needs school in the inner West of Sydney and he gets labeled a trouble maker (not suspended) because he can't tell people what the issue is. Every special needs student has different requirements and to pigeon hole them is wrong.
