'The material costs and environmental impacts that we envisage from our new concept are much lower than what we see today,' said researcher Patrik Johansson.

say they have designed an aluminum battery that is more environmentally-friendly than the typical lithium kind—it has twice the energy density of previous versions and is made up of materials abundant in supply.

To overcome this particular dilemma, researchers from Chalmers University of Technology, in Sweden, and the National Institute of Chemistry, in Slovenia, have replaced the graphite cathode with one made of an organic, carbon-based molecule—called anthraquinone. This allows for the storage of positive charge-carriers from the electrolyte carried by the battery and thus, a higher energy density.

The batteries come with the added economic benefit of lower production costs than the lithium batteries we use today.
