Julien Chang mines his memories for feeling on his latest synth pop single “Memory Loss,” available today on. The 19-year old Baltimore native sinks into the past to relive a euphoric moment that quickly gets swept up into a fruitless chase to grasp the unreachable. The song offers a wistful optimism that’s underpinned by a palpable anxiety spurred by a prevailing fear of memory loss, to which Chang admits, "a worsening memory is something I've always been worried about.
“The song was made with a kind of structural rigidity in mind, and about memory’s natural lack of it when having trouble putting faces to names, for example,” Chang tells. “It’s easy to be frustrated by that feeling, but being left with a sudden emotional reaction sparked by some stimulus for an unclear reason can be as lovely as it is disorienting."
Chang builds his well of sensory information with a collage of bubbly syncopated blips and warbled synths that swirl above punchy percussion.
