Paula Abdul arrives at the 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on April 2, 2016 in Beverly Hills, Calif.has proven to be a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ community, especially in her near-constant advocacy during and following the HIV/AIDS crisis of the '80s and '90s. Now, the megastar is being recognized for her contributions.
On Wednesday , GLAAD announced that Abdul will receive the Ariadne Getty Ally Award at the 2019 GLAAD Gala San Francisco. Named after the philantrhopist and member of GLAAD's Board of Directors, the Ariadne Getty Ally Award is given to famous allies who have dedicated their time and effort toward bringing awareness to LGBTQ issues. Last year, the award was introduced for the first time and given to actress Alyssa Milano.
“Throughout her remarkable career, Paula Abdul has used her platform to raise awareness for issues affecting the LGBTQ community, especially HIV/AIDS,” Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD's president and CEO, said in a statement. “Even in times of heavy stigma, Paula demonstrated true allyship by consistently supporting and advocating for the LGBTQ community.
Along with Abdul, GLAAD announced that comedian and actor Dan Levy will be presented with the Davidson/Valentini Award for his continued work in promoting LGBTQ rights.
