At 86, Julie Newmar has a simple plan for overcoming life’s challenges: “Take everything you have and make it better.”

Alstroemeria, commonly known as Peruvian or Inca Lily, blooms alongside a myriad of other flowers inside Julie Newmar’s front garden. Roses are one of Julie Newmar’s favorite flowers, here cascading off a trellis in her front yard. /Julie Newmar and her son, John, spend most Sundays on this two-person chaise in the shade of an olive tree, reading and watching what happens in the garden. John, 38, was born with Down syndrome and became deaf and mute about a bout with meningitis when he was 3.

Julie Newmar, born Julia Chalene Newmeyer, has found happiness in her gardens since she was toddler, sitting in the yard her parents made"and feeling so beloved." “Wherever I went, gardens would grow up around me, even on window sills,” she said. “Some people have dogs... I like leaves. I like plants, and I like flowers too. Ecstasy is big in my life.”

Around West L.A., Newmar is nearly as famous for opening her gardens to charitable events and garden clubs as she is for her role as Catwoman, the most popular villain in the 1966-67 “Batman” TV series. The character was lots of fun, she said, but nowhere near as challenging as her favorite role, as Rhoda the Robot, in the 1965 TV show, “My Living Doll,” in which she played a top-secret robot with a super computer mind and a shapely woman’s body.

After Olivia de Havilland posed for a photo on her 103rd birthday, Julie Newmar said she was inspired to commission a portrait for her 86th, and borrowed a surfboard for the pose.

When I'm 86 I'll need a simple plan.

I have always thought she was such a beautiful woman, and back in her day, you never heard any gossip or issues about her. She is still truly beautiful--I can't believe she's 86. It sounds like she's made a beautiful life for herself and her son. Her garden is magnificent.

my trick is live until you die

Thanks for everything, Julie Newmar
