Why James Acaster thinks 2016 was music's best year ever

What was the greatest year for music of all time? Many of us, when asked, would probably choose an era from our own youth.

Some of the albums he highlights were both groundbreaking and hugely successful. Beyonce's Lemonade, for example, or Frank Ocean's critically-acclaimed Blonde. Kanye West and Radiohead are also namechecked, as is David Bowie's final studio album Blackstar, released days before his death. "We need to stop this writing off of modern day music, because the rules for what was the best year for music of all time keep getting made by old people," he says."I bought over 500 albums from 2016... and if I list my favourite albums now, most of them were released in 2016.

Acaster delivers all this with a slight glint in his eye, clearly enjoying the debate his claims have sparked while he's been promoting the book. And, he acknowledges, the topic is subjective and the book's central argument is deliberately provocative.

Is that the best year for hip hop music or?

clearly hasnt listened to the 60’s, 70’s,80’s even some of the 90’s

1977 YouAreOfficiallyOldIf

Can’t even read this.

Glad someone else loves that Jeff Rosenstock song as much as me

He’s wrong it’s the 80s

I love 💕 James’ dry humour

Who?

1984 was last best year for music

1991 for me.

Every era of music has highs & lows whether you like it or not... So why is everyone automatically assuming that James’ musical taste being focused on more modern releases automatically makes it bad?

I think after the 90s music began to downgrade

The boomer energy is strong in this thread

It amazes me that people don’t understand how liking music, or any art form, is subjective. Of course you like the music of whatever era you grew up in, but people saying “1974” like that’s more of a fact than anyone else’s opinion is hilarious.

Because he’s only 34

Didn’t everyone die in 16?

I think you will find the 80’s were better

Every year in the 80s was better than 2016

Ents Most of these people replying don't know shit about music. They think the mainstream is all there is and keep on whining how 'they don't make real music anymore' yet do nothing to find said good music 🙄 It's everywhere you wankers.

Absolute load of tosh! The eighties was the pinnacle for music.

good year maybe; but nothing touches the mid 60s to mid 70s ; Beatles/ Stones/ Dylan/ Pink Floyd/ The British Invasion/ Led Zeppelin/ Cream/ Fleetwood Mac/ Motown/ Muscle shoals/ Otis Redding/ / Aretha Franklin/ Santana / The Who/ The Eagles / Crosby / Stills/ Nash/ Young Etc

Every year produces great music!

I beg to differ!

1st who's James Acaster? 2nd 2016 was okay 3rd 2018 and 2019 are looking miles better from my perspective 🎵🎶🤘🤘🤘

1996 the year of BritPop

Who’s he? 🤷‍♂️

Don’t be stupid

No one cares about his opinion.

He has never lived!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Because he’s had a short life and knows no better?

Who?

Who is he? 😳

When I was a kid we had to put up with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Does anybody know who this man is.

Is he serious ?

1994 (Oasis - DM, Blur - Parklife, Nas - Illmatic, Portishead - Dummy, Nivana - Unplugged, Jeff Buckley - Grace, Prodigy- MFTJG, Notorious BIG - Ready To Die, Underworld - DubNoBass, Pulp - His n’ Hers and many more

Absolutely ridiculous!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Who is he?

No.

Slow news day?

1989 was the best year for music as it wasn’t as superficial as it is in this decade.

I'm just throwing up

Who

Can I get an infinite_scream for this please?

Tool

Why does his opinion matter?

yawn

Rap, crap hip hop Nicky the Minge, Cardigan etc etc. Best years for music 60/70. It stood the test of time groups formed then still play to packed houses. The musicians from then and singers still can play to packed houses. 2016 the best having a giraffe.

Any of the years between 1961 and 1970 ; just pick one say 1965 .

Definitely not the year the B-Minor Mass was completed, nah.

Never heard of him, but i know he’s a nôb.

Ffs shut up man, keep to comedy

He’s a shit comedian that knows even less about music. Great PR for him though. I’ve shown more interest in this shit he’s said than I have his crap stand up

1979

1977

It's nearly 2 am, I usually ignore seemingly pointless articles but I need a break & this may have some humour or interest to it. Don't let me down JamesAcaster

There hasn’t been good music since the Beatles broke up.

😂 😂

The best year for music was 3000bc

Some strong albums that year (David Bowie - Blackstar, Bon Iver - 22, A Million) so yes, definitely a strong year, but strongEST, I disagree 😅 1979 for example was a WAY stronger year by FAR with albums (Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures, Pink Floyd - The Wall) pretty far-fetched

Who? Looks like the guy who works in the local Greggs

Because he’s a massive troll?

If I knew who he was, his opinion might mean something.

JamesAcaster

Of course it wasn't.

👀

Was it because he had an album out that did well? Musics been dying for the past 2 decades. It keeps getting worse and worse.

I'm usually all about free speech, but he should be shot for saying that.

Sorry, that's incorrect. Thanks for playing.

Because he's 34

Jesus fekin Christ no.
