Bai Yan was born in 1920 in Wuhan, China, and came to Singapore at a young age with a song and dance troupe. Following an 11-year career with Channel 8, Bai Yan retired in 1996 after he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Star Awards. On 5 May this year, more than 130 artists and crew gathered to celebrate Bai Yan’s 100th birthday. Guests in attendance included Zoe Tay, Christopher Lee, Aileen Tan, Jin Yinji, Zheng Geping, Hong Huifang, Pan Lingling and Chen Xiuhuan.
