Why are all your favorite songs suddenly being sued? Recent cases involving Katy Perry, Led Zeppelin and Ed Sheeran mark a trend that shows no sign of slowing

that Perry and her label Capitol Records owed Flame $2.78 million. Of that, it said, $550,000 should come from the singer and the rest from the Universal Music-owned Capitol.“They’re trying to own basic building blocks of music, the alphabet of music that should be available to everyone,” Perry’s lawyer Christine Lepera argued in the trial’s closing arguments. Others warned of the trial setting a dangerous precedent for future cases.

But the real damage was done years ago, according to many industry observers. A series of court decisions in the last 20 years — from a successful Isley Brothers suit against Michael Bolton in 2000 to the multimillion payout that Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams wereto the family of Marvin Gaye for “Blurred Lines” in 2015 — has tremendously relaxed plagiarism proof standards and expanded the scope of what’s protectable in copyright law.

that “while we respect the judicial process, we are extremely disappointed in the ruling made today, which sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward.”Copycat cases started popping up immediately. Sandy Wilbur, a longtime forensic musicologist who served as an expert witness on the “Blurred Lines” case,

“Most musicians are working in a finite innovation space.” You gotta be kidding me. That’s why mainstrain music is so shitty nowadays.

Because they’re running out of songs!!

Most of the mainstream music made in the last 30 years has been produced by some 10 different producer's or so. There's only so many ways music can be made now

Stairway to heaven.

ZeppelinCurse They arent being sued, they are in commercials

Nemesis?

This one might be the most egregious yet. What the songs have in common is three adjacent descending notes in a minor key... That's it.

These aren’t my fave songs

None of these are my favorite songs

I guess Weird Als gonna be sued big time then for every song he did. Unless the original artist were paid royalties.

Blame it all on D, G, E and C. And if that isn’t passing the jury then just say F did it while A hides in the corner.

Because has-beens are running out of money and this seems to be an easy way to try and stay relevant.

Easy. I've run out of ideas.

ZeppelinCurse Because there are twelve notes, 7 main scales/modes, and only a handful of song arrangements used in typical mainstream western music.

Hilarious

Because of The Blurred Lines lawsuit and the giant door it left open and the nail it hammered in every music lover’s heart. Appeals should minimize the case law ruling, at the least. At best, create a new judicial test for music.

.. cause juries are musically illiterate & lawyers like making money?

Record company death throes?

A song being sued? That's funny RS headline writer...

Duh

Have u seen the Movie Yesterday, that might explain it

Every song produced now has to have a sound similar to another. It's like 'it reminds me of another song' as long as it's not blatant note for note then move on. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

Twinkle Twinkie Little Star, Baa Baa Black Sheep & the Alphabet Song are all the same tune

Rock is dead. I feel like a music dinosaur. Heartbreaking but I still have my old collections to soothe me.

SoundsLikeTeenSpirit

Terrible trend, the number of bands who have been influenced by, borrowed, stolen from is enormous. Sound like a shady grey area as well which will be defined differently by different courts.

Quite ridiculous

Dark Horse is my favorite. (Shouldn’t have lost) I also like Thinking Out Loud. I’m keeping my eyes on that one! Going to the Supreme Court is a big deal!

Led Zeppelin has a long history of being accused of song theft and based on the pattern and how many songs they have that old opening bands performed they sure come off as song thieves.

Why are some of these artists being sued decades after the songs came out?! Was somebody living under a rock and hadn't heard Stairway to Heaven before?!

Zeppelin were just out and out thieves. I don't think anyone defends their shenanigans any longer.

Well ....Led Zeppelin should know....☺️☺️

katy legend

Maybe....there's too many unoriginal tunes going 'round everyone's head?

Because they are notmy favorite songs and pop music is derivative soulless formula to be get your money
