In the modern age of television, a room led by a first-time showrunner, backed by more experienced producers, is common.

showrunners have never made a TV show before.” The crux of the piece was designed to point out the fact that not only is the newseries being produced by Amazon the first showrunner job of its creators, but that it’s also their first job in television … well … ever. And the only proper response one can have if they have any understanding of the dynamics of television production is … so what?must be built on shaky ground if J.D.

Beyond the example everyone knows that just concluded on HBO this year, the list of other successful shows that were created and run by showrunners that had never worked in television before includes the Matt Nix run. And these are a mere fraction of examples one could pull out of the modern age of television that saw the rise of this kind of showrunner in the 2000s.

The creative success of a television series and that success’ longevity has nothing to do with whether or not a showrunner has worked in television before. It has to do with whether or not that showrunner is willing to listen to the team that surrounds them. Payne and McKay hired the kind of creative team that is designed to do one thing, help support them in creating a vision that stands on stable ground.

Television is a game based in the success of the whole, not the success of the one. The most successful series will always be the one that allows the team to thrive as a cohesive organism that plays off one another. As it stands, there is no reason to believe a single person on the currentteam doesn’t understand that. And to knock the show for having the kind of showrunners it has is simply shortsighted and naive to what the modern television landscape actually looks like in 2019.
