Streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube could soon be forced to show local content, bringing them into line with free-to-air television channels. 9News

Ensuring global tech companies pay their fair share of tax outside their home bases in the US and elsewhere was not covered in the Australian competition watchdog's inquiry.

Opposition communications spokeswoman Michelle Rowland indicated Labor was broadly supportive of tightening the tax rules imposed on the tech titans. "These enormous multinational companies who are making substantial profits from Australian consumers, I think it's right to expect that their contribution to Australia should be commensurate and should reflect the value that they're getting from Australian consumers."

Australia and others will need to tread carefully, after France faced the wrath of Donald Trump, having gone it alone with a tax aimed at US technology companies.

What a joke, Australian content on Free to Air TV is a joke at the best of times.

What local content....you mean those crap real life contestant shows that the ratings are dropping at a massive rate because everyone is sick to death of crap

If only local content wasn't terrible....

Great ruin what we love

And how bet you they plan to force them to license said content. What a terrible idea. Also, anybody can post content and even stream on Youtube if they choose. For Netflix, this would be a logistical nightmare to cater to all regions throughout the country

Good job. That will take things backwards and limit content. YouTube is completely different from free to air TV, so it shouldn’t be treated as such.

red_light_rch3 That's the sole reason I have Netflix, to get away from the crap on free to air...

But why they are not free to air they are paid content

They already show local content, sparingly yes, but they do. So what's new?

I have never heard of such a stupid idea. Why would international companies comply with such a rule?

As an independent content creator this is great news!

w-what Australia is actually standing up to big tech?! WEW! Would love to see them stand up to the alphabet inc monopoly but I guess one thing at a time.
