The bus — called Fairbanks Bus 142 or The Magic Bus — has attracted many hikers, many of whom have needed rescuing, since it was made famous, first by Jon Krakauer's book published in 1996 and then by Sean Penn's 2007 film starring Emile Hirsch. Mr McCandless was found dead in the bus almost four months later, believed to have died of starvation.
