The last time Andy sees his father, he tells him about a perverse, indecipherable dream he had: the image of a couple kissing, their bodies and sexual contours seeming to merge, to combine, to the point of becoming indistinguishable.
Andy is a slow talker, quick to avert his eyes in what can’t help but imply some underlying shame. His father Frederick , a wizened former figure skater still bearing the accent of his native Germany, is unimpressed by both the dream and the hesitancy of his son’s confession. “You know, when you were young,” says Frederick, “I thought you would never stop growing. Look at you now. Like your mother.” Later that day, while out on the ice at the local rink, Frederick dies.
The damage, it should be said, includes the lives of people like Andy, who—now completely parentless—finds this out the hard way. After his father dies, he meets Dr. Wallace Fiennes , who’s come to pay his respects: he once treated Andy’s mother. He is also, it turns out, the country’s primary architect of lobotomy. Scorned, marginalized, and shut out of his prior position, he is nevertheless still practicing.is the story of what happens when Andy joins Dr.
You notice it from the very first photo Andy takes of a young woman pre-procedure. There’s vulnerability on both sides and, as Sheridan performs it, instantaneous shame as soon as the camera clicks. Andy is the photographer in this instance, but Alverson films the scene with Andy’s back to the wall and his gaze met by that of the audience—making Andy as much the subject of a portrait as he is the purveyor of it.
tight aspect ratio and bright, dull palette—hallmarks of distributor A24—make everything on-screen seem as washed-out and placid as the mental fogs overtaking Dr. Fiennes’s patients. It isn’t so much that we experience this world through their eyes. Rather, this is the world as it is: no warmth, only barren light.
melvillmatic This is an excellent review (it corresponds with my opinion!)
melvillmatic '... unearths the dark side of lobotomy in mid-century America.' as opposed to the oft-explored lighter side?
