The average age of the world's biggest live acts is 53 - and rising. Columnist Tim Ingham explains why

The next-youngest artist in this top 10 is Justin Timberlake who, at 38, is a full decade older than Sheeran. Here are two standout numbers to remember: Half of Pollstar’sare over 50 years old, and three of them have surpassed their 70th birthday. The average age of Pollstar’s top 10 global touring acts in the first half of this year, then, was 52.6 years old.

In fact, a trend appears to have taken hold over the past five years of Pollstar’s midyear top 10 global artists: They’re getting older and older. Consider that the average top 10-grossing act in H1 2015 was just 39.8 years old, more than a decade younger than this year’s crop. Such numbers will obviously raise concerns about the lack of new talent breaking into the upper ranks of blockbuster live tours – a worry that becomes all the starker when we consider how things have evolved in recent years.

bradwavra The Rolling Stones in my heroes unbelievable

Why in the World Does The NFL SUPERBOWL at Halftime Use current artists INSTEAD of our Rock Gods? lol They won't Be Around Forever LATER this Week Check out The GREAT BOOTYZOU Band RENO BOOTYZOU UPLOADS...

This may have something to do with the fact their music is so much better than the crap that is out there today...

Geez i wonder why!

Ed Sheeran Can't believe it.

I also don't believe it is ticket price alone. Nearly all my friends in bands and even touring Europe right now are over 60 playing in bars and clubs with cover charges as cheap as ten bucks. The crowds paying to see them at small clubs are all ages, including in their twenties.

That age average is only because Keith Richards won't die

That should tell you something about today’s music, and how good music is no longer appreciated. Therefore.. new talent is hard to come by

I think fewer kids take up guitar these days & many young recording artists rely too heavily on Autotune for vocals. I know folks having trouble finding enough kids these days for Battle of The Bands events. Learning guitar is not easy for kids in an age of instant gratification.

they charge the most for tickets

That’s because they don’t make music like they once did in any genres of music

Says more about how dogshit today’s music is

Shocking considering, besides Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, the rest we’re made by American Idol.

Uh oh

I'm going to take a wild guess without reading the article. Older people still buy CDs and can afford hugely expensive tickets and mostly go to see artists that were big in their day?

For awhile.

In America, the average age of the president is 12! Sorry, I stand corrected...5!

Cause anything after 1992 is crap

Big surprise - their fans are in the same demo and their disposable income is rising as well

That’s because all the fans are the same age and now at peak earning

That's actually a bad thing.

If you don’t include Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones, the average age falls to 23🤣

Nobody will remember Ed Sheeran when he's 52.

ashcroftethics Barely alive

Stadium acts are dying art. sadly.

I feel like there are less universal superstars these days because there is so many niche genres that have their own “stars”. Super grateful for all the OG icons paving the way and opening up the world to arena style jams because they will always be super fun!!

Great article. Don’t forget googoodolls 👏💕

Hell ya!

They are from a generation that can afford concert tickets.

Cause they're from a generation when the radio was the biggest source of new music, today's music scene is much more diverse and no musician today could likely ever be half as popular as the beatles, stones, or nirvana.

but if the Stones stopped touring it would be 27

because boomers are the only ones willing to spend a rack watching washed up corpses from their glory days
