Harry Connick, Jr.'s debut album for Verve Records is going to be a love letter to songwriting icon Cole Porter, and will coincide with a Broadway show later this year, the label announced on Thursday. Focused exclusively on the songs of Porter,will be released in October, followed in December by a limited-run show at the Nederlander Theatre on Broadway.
Connick selected the songs from Porter's Great American Songbook and handled the writing and arrangements performed by an orchestra including his longtime touring band. Songs include such classics as "Anything Goes" and "You Do Something To Me," among others. "This is the first time I've taken a deep dive into another artist's repertoire, and Cole Porter was my No. 1 choice for the project," he said.
The singer/pianist/actor signed with Verve earlier this year following a decades-long partnership with Columbia that kicked off with his 1988 debut,. He announced his new label home during an appearance on NBC's Today show in March. , will have its world premiere at the Durham Performing Arts Center in Durham, NC on Sept. 21 and 22 before making its way to the Nederlander for a Broadway run in December. The artist will embark on a national tour following the Broadway engagement.
"I am beyond excited to be returning to the stage to share my interpretation of the work of a true American genius," he added.
