Reminiscent of the hit Canadian play and TV series Kim’s Convenience, Superior Donuts also ran as a TV sitcom. The play is indeed very funny. Keltie Forsyth’s excellent Ensemble Theatre production and fine cast generate laughs galore until it becomes clear that much more is going on here than just comedy.
Max is casually racist, funny in broken English, but not funny to black cop and Star Trek fanboy James. Irish-American Randy is sweet on Arthur but he has trouble responding to her and most other things. Franco prods Arthur in hilarious ways to revitalize the shop and his “sad and bleak and hopeless” self.
Ethnicity and race matter a lot in this multiculturally fraught community. So too economics. Black kids like Franco and indies like Superior Donuts struggle to survive. A corporate tsunami threatens neighbourhood identity. The play name-checks Starbucks, Whole Foods, Best Buy and more. What America is and will be is its capital-T theme.
