At the time, Junod was skeptical about the near-saintly TV figure, whose show was a well of hope, teaching children lessons about everything from the importance of being kind to the truth about mortality. Junod, played in the film bygoes deep into Rogers’s personal life, learning more about the host, observing his rituals and coming around to the realization that Fred Rogers was the real deal.
“He’s a guide for how to slow yourself down and connect with what’s true in your heart, your kindness, your patience, and your goodness,” Heller said about Rogers in a recent interview with . “Having his voice in my head for the past two years while I’ve been making this movie has made me a better parent.”and even filmed in the actual studio where the show was made, Heller said. That made it all the more surreal when Hanks showed up in his costume to play the part of the TV host. “We’re so used to [seeing] Fred in that world, to see somebody else inhabit it, it takes a moment for your mind to flip,” she said.
