Renowned actor David Gulpilil receives top national NAIDOC award

Lecturer and activist Dean Duncan was named Person of the Year, while Indigenous healthcare worker and advocate Thelma Weston took home the award for Female Elder of the Year.Bangarra Dance Theatre choreographer Elma Gada Kris was named artist of the year, while teenage R&B singer and political activist Mi-kaisha Masella was named youth of the year, having previously performed for NAIDOC week in 2016.

Co-Chair Patricia Thompson said the awards celebrate and recognise years of Indigenous excellence in a variety of fields. “The National NAIDOC Awards show the breadth of the inspiring work happening around the country in art, music, sport, language, education, employment, training, community empowerment and environmental and cultural preservation,” Ms Thompson said.as an inspiration not only for our Nations’ First Peoples, but all Australians.”

Decided by the national NAIDOC committee, the awards take into account nominees' achievements in the past year, in addition to "past achievements and ongoing contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities and Australia more widely".
