After making his mark running Switzerland’s Locarno Festival, Europe’s preeminent independent cinema event, for six years, Italian film critic Chatrian emerged in June as the surprise choice to become the Berlin Film Festival’s artistic director starting May 2019, running the starry event in tandem with Berlinale managing director Mariette Rissenbeek, who moves up to
executive director and becomes the first woman to co-head the event. Though hiring a foreigner to run a national institution is rare, the soft-spoken Chatrian, who raised the bar at Locarno, is known as a dedicated and discerning cinephile with good networking skills, and he is expected to set the Berlinale on a new course, especially reviving its role as a German cinema driver.
