As Barcelona’s Primavera Sound becomes the first large-scale festival to adopt a 50/50 gender split, Vogue asks the women on its line-up: is the music industry patriarchy finally about to shatter?

For Primavera Sound, the decision was made based on an understanding that great things come from championing and supporting gender equality. “I'm positive about that,” Marta Pallerès, who heads up the festival’s international press, tells. “Not only in an environment like a music festival, but everywhere: from an office, to a restaurant or a museum. I think it says a lot about a company that cares about gender equality.

In a time of hashtag activism, easily exploited for the purpose of commercial gain, is it possible for a company’s decision making to be rooted in something real and palpable? In Primavera Sound’s case – as Rodriguez and Podpadec say – it seems there is a genuine yearning for change. Songwriter Nilufer Yanya, whose critically-acclaimed debut albumwas released last month, is cautiously optimistic.

After all, music festivals have a unique ability to be both lucrative endeavours and safe spaces for those who need them. Anybody who’s been lucky enough to find themselves in the pit of a Beyoncé set, or seen Robyn perform at sundown, will know that an artist represents more than just their music. They have a powerful effect on who we are as people – like mirrors held up to the crowd, suggesting a path to happiness and success many are still striving for.

Considering women have played such a formative part in live music culture and the creation of those safe spaces, isn’t it strange that it’s taken this long for festivals to realise that gender equality on their line-ups is something to actively strive for?“Strange” is not the right word, says world-renowned DJ and producer Jayda G. “It's sad that these are the issues we are facing in 2019 with a lack of representation.

Which is exactly why Primavera Sound's decisions matters. By showing that women can win a crowd just as easily as their male counterparts, they’re setting an industry standard. It is one that all music festivals should learn a valuable lesson from.
