It’s almost 15 years since Kaiser Chiefs played their first ever Irish gig shortly after the release of the smash hit single I Predict A Riot.
“He just had an operation and he’s going on back on tour. It’s a real commitment. On one hand, I think we could just do it forever. And, on the other hand, I think we could stop tomorrow,” he said. “We’ve worked very hard on the new album. We’re very proud of it. We tried to do something new on this seventh record. We don’t want to just keep doing the same thing over and over again. Sometimes that’s to our determent,” he said.
The last album’s title, Stay Together, was a reference to Brexit. Even though this interview was done over the phone, you could almost imagine Simon grimacing at the mere mention of the UK’s chaotic divorce from the EU. “Everyone enjoyed making the album, but I think everyone is quite glad as well doing the live stuff because it’s a totally different experience and you get to see new places. We’re just going to enjoy that for little bit and probably quite soon get started on the next one,” he proffered.“We haven’t been, I don’t think, for quite a long time. I’m really looking forward to getting over again. We’ve always had really good gigs in Ireland,” he said.
Is it true that before every gig the band has a group huddle while listening to Paul Simon’s You Can Call Me Al? Most overseas musicians like to wax lyrically about their love of U2, Thin Lizzy, or Van Morrison when having a chinwag with an Irish music scribe. But Simon, who is a diehard Leeds United supporter, seems more keen to chat about Irish footballers who’ve donned the white jersey of his beloved side nicknamed The Peacocks.
