That’s not to take away any credit from Lionsgate’s marketing departments, nor Reeves himself who sold the living hell out of the picture over the last few weeks. But this monster opening weekend, even if the film doesn’t quite leg out as well as its predecessors is a testament to the potential of homegrown and original franchises as long as you’re not breaking the bank. It’s a sign that other films can over-perform even alongside a Disney MCU mega-movie.
