The craziest and funniest of all Hollywood movies, His Girl Friday, will come up from the archives this month, almost 80 years after it was made by Howard Hawks. The occasion is The Fourth Estate Film Series, organized by Washington Monthly, beginning May 29 in Washington. Audiences will see and discuss a list of admired movies about journalism.
The festival-opening movie is All the President’s Men, the 1976 Oscar-winner about the downfall of Richard Nixon. Screenings will take place at the American Film Institute’s Silver Theatre. With each movie, journalists connected with it will be there to comment and take questions; in this case Bob Woodward will be on hand. Other films include Broadcast News, Network and, of course, His Girl Friday.
With great success, Hawks cast Cary Grant as Walter Burns and Rosalind Russell as Hildy. Eventually the audience realizes that Hildy and Walter still love each other, in their tumultuous way. Can they reunite? Walter acts selfishly and frames his ex-wife’s fiancé. As her boss, he vetoes a honeymoon, deciding they should follow instead a good story developing that’s professionally more important.
