Big show, side show, no show

In 1994, I sat with a group of Australian cricketers in a hotel room in Rawalpindi, watching a newly arrived tape of the, then in its first full season. Literally, everyone was rolling about laughing. It was fresh, clever, irreverent and funny. Yes, it was blokey, in a blokey time. It was already wildly popular.. Mixing big names with calculated maladroitness,caught the zeitgeist of this town.

Footy became an incidental. Scandal beset the show. Fans might have been titillated for a while, but they grew bored. Facing irrelevance, Newman contrived ever greater insults. He was never going to age gracefully. Periodically, Nine suspended him, but by then even the suspensions felt like PR gimmicks.

Hundreds of thousands of viewers became tens. The show had become a parody of itself. The death knell was there to be heard in 2014 when Newman sneered at a gay American footballer. Once, the audience would have cheered him. That night, it booed.On The Couch
