Sydney artist Tony Costa has been awarded this year’s Archibald prize for his portrait of fellow artist Lindy Lee. Mr Costa collected the $100,000 prize money after placing as a finalist in the 2015, 2017 and 2018 competitions.
A number of records have been broken in this year’s Archibald price, including the highest number of female artists and subjects, as well as the most entries at 919. Mr Costa says, ‘You dream about having your work hung in the Archibald… I’m overwhelmed to say the least.’ The Archibald is exhibiting at the Art Gallery of New South Wales from Saturday until September 8 before taking a regional tour of New South Wales and Victoria.
